Out of Your Shell by Dave Horlick  Fri, 31 Mar 2006 05:03:22 GMT

Our friends are enjoying themselves at the public aquarium, seen from the outside. | Bridget: What do you suppose clams make their shells from?Zeke: Sand? Boulders? | Bridget: Maybe! Let's take them out and see.Several months later. | Meg: Nope. The shells actually got bigger. | Zeke: Whoa!Meg: What about the seawater itself? | Bridget: I'll dry some out.(a clock indicates the passage of a few hours) | Zeke: All that's left is chalky, white dustZeke: Hey...shells are white! | Meg: Suppose we filled the tanks back up with filtered water?Zeke: Clever! | Bridget is carrying a filtered water pitcher.More months later... | (one tank is labeled "Control" while the other is labeled "Variable") | Zeke: The clams in the seawater have thicker shells than the distilled water ones!Bridget: So shells are built from stuff dissolved into seawater. Who knew? | Meg: Can we eat the clams now?
